Online coaching has arrived on the market. There are hardly any coaches left who don't use phone, mail, chat, or other platforms (with multiple communication channels) from time to time. Regarding the competences required in online coaching, people may think that the competences acquired for face-to-face counselling can be transferred to the online area without losses or restrictions. This is only partially true. While counselling skills acquired for face-to-face counselling are essential, online coaching also requires additional skills, depending on the channel used. On the one hand, technical skills and knowledge, for example, on data protection and data security; on the other hand, media skills in a targeted manner.
Online coaching is a rapidly evolving field of practice. Current developments range from apps that offer unguided self-help to face-to-face coaching sessions where there is mail contact between coachee and coach between sessions.
Online coaching includes all forms of coaching that are completely or partially carried out via media such as the Internet and/or telephone. Online coaching differs from face-to-face coaching essentially in that coaches and coachees are not present in the same room during the interaction, but communicate via the Internet or telephone.
Today, online coaching is a reality. An internet search leads to numerous online coaching offers. In Australia and the USA, online coaching is now a matter of course. In conversation with other coaches, it has become apparent that many exchange information with their clients by telephone or e-mail. And it is not only about making appointments. Those interactions also contain moments of advice. Thus, hybrid settings are becoming part of everyday coaching even without the coaches calling their approach online coaching.
Practice is running far ahead of research in this respect. If you take the number of corresponding offers on the internet as a yardstick, you would actually have to assume that online coaching works. A good overview of various aspects of online coaching can be found in Ghods and Boyce (2013). Furthermore, the analogy that the evidence from studies on online psychotherapy and self-help approaches can also be applied to online coaching because it is a similar format is plausible. Online coaching has obviously already passed the practical test. So it inspires confidence.
It is becoming more and more relevant and important. Those who specialize in it are experts in the specific competencies that are required for distance counselling. E-coaches are able to "get into action" and carry out counselling with clients they do not know. Experience shows that attitudes towards online coaching change by doing. Once you get started, your enthusiasm will grow rapidly.
Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. Virtual reality, chatbots, sensor technology and the use of artificial intelligence will expand the field of possibilities in the future. What impact these developments might have on the future competence profile of online coaches is very hard to imagine today and, therefore, remains open at the moment.
